Richard Eccles
Richard is the First Assistant Secretary of the Primary
and Ambulatory Care Division in the Australian Department of Health
and Ageing. The Division covers all aspects of the policy and funding
of primary care services, including primary care financing; primary
care models of service delivery; the electronic health (eHealth) work
program; responsibility for quality and safety issues; health service
access; rural and remote health services; and the establishment of
Australia’s National Health Call Centre Network.

I have been working as
a practice nurse (PN) for the past 11 years and I am currently the
President of the Australia Practice Nurses Association (APNA).
APNA
is the peak national body that represents nurses working in general
practice. I have completed a research fellowship on the perceptions
of PNs in relation to patient outcomes and their recognition as a professional
within the clinical team.

Dr Mukesh Haikerwal
Dr Mukesh Haikerwal held the position of President
of the Australian Medical Association from May 2005 to May 2007.
Dr
Haikerwal also held the position of Vice President of Australian Medical
Association from 2003 – 2005 and President of the Australian
Medical Association (Victoria) from 2001 to 2003. In his AMA roles,
Dr Haikerwal represented the medical profession to the public, across
all levels of government and in the electronic and written media.
Dr
Haikerwal is a General Practitioner in a small group practice in Altona
North, Melbourne. He has consulted in all aspects of general practice
for over 15 years. Educated in the United Kingdom, Dr Haikerwal trained
as a specialist general practitioner. He attained additional qualifications
in emergency care, obstetrics and gyneacology, and family planning.
Dr Haikerwal is married with three boys. His personal interests include
travel, film, cricket, cycling and cookery.

Nancy Huang – A brief biography
Nancy comes from a clinical and
public health background, with 13 years in general practice and a few
more in academia and public health.
She has focused her work in prevention
and management of chronic conditions in the primary care sector. Her
interest is in the translation of evidence into practice, through implementation
and behaviour change strategies. She has worked extensively across
health priority areas such as cardiovascular disease, asthma and cancer
prevention.
Currently she works in the National Heart Foundation of
Australia to coordinate the clinical guidelines work area to reduce
the evidence treatment gaps.

Mitch Messer
Mitch Messer is the Chairperson of the Consumers’ Health
Forum of Australia (CHF), the organisation providing a respected and
informed consumer voice on national health issues.
He is President
of Cystic Fibrosis Worldwide and a Trustee of the Australian Cystic
Fibrosis Research Trust. He is currently a member of the Pharmaceutical
Benefits Advisory Committee and the Australian Pharmaceutical Advisory
Council.

Anne Rogers
Anne Rogers is Professor of the Sociology of Health Care, in the Primary
Care Research Group, Manchester Medical School, The University of Manchester.
She currently leads the research programme on self-management at the
National Primary Care Research and Development Centre - a programme
of research which has developed multi-disciplinary research over the
last 10 years.
The programme includes a number of randomised control
trials, qualitative research exploring the role and experience of patients
and lay people in undertaking self-care and living with a chronic condition,
policy analysis. Her other research interests are in medical sociology
and especially the sociology of mental health and illness.
